Beginning System Configuration
This setup is for establishing the breeder colony of tilapia. We are going to incorporate a duckweed growing operation into this system.
The Tanks!
Our three 100 gallon tanks. All of the fish are being kept in the far right tank. They will be housed there till they out-grow it. We have to use chicken wire to prevent escapes!
The Filter
This is an view of our filter system. The filter system consists of a 200 micron screen pond pre-filter (the black bin), then goes to a sand filter on a 1/2 hp engine ( the sand has been replaced with Perma Beads), then it goes to the 40W UV sterilizer before being returned to the tanks.
Fish Air
This is the aerator we use to oxygenate all of our tanks. Each tank has a large cubic air stone.
Garage Aquaponics
This is my beautiful fiance showing how we converted half of the garage into our fish room.
Safety measures
We used the existing drain on the 100 gallon Rubbermaid tanks. The red handles are shut-off valves so we can isolate any one tank from the entire system. This is very useful during maintenance.
Improvised Heating (Updated)
This was our beginning temperature control method. We kept the room around 75 F. On very cold days we covered the tank 3/4 with foam board and focused the heat around the tank with the space heater.
We now using submersible 300W heaters in each tank. Also because of the heat we have had to add a window AC unit to keep the fish room cool during the heat of the day.
